Utah Unemployment Ticks Upward as More People Seek Work

OUR UTAH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE INCHED UP LAST MONTH, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE LAST JULY.

STATE WORKFORCE SERVICE OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED FRIDAY, THE UTAH JOBLESS RATE WAS 4.1 PERCENT IN MARCH... UP FROM 3.9 PERCENT, IN FEBRURARY.

THE RATE IS STILL WELL BELOW THE NATIONAL AVERAGE, OF 6.7 PERCENT UNEMPLOYED.

OUR MARCH RATE IS ALSO DOWN -- EIGHT-TENTHS OF A PERCENT -- FROM THE SAME MONTH, A YEAR AGO.

GOVERNOR GARY HERBERT SAYS THE NUMBERS REFLECT GROWING OPTIMISM, AS MORE OUT-OF-WORK RESIDENTS RESUME THEIR JOB SEARCHES.

HE SAYS OUR UTAH ECONOMY HAS ADDED NEARLY 36-THOUSAND NEW JOBS, OVER THE PAST 12 MONTHS.
