Semitrailer Crash on Interstate 80 Closes Busy Freeway

AUTHORITIES SAY GOOD SAMARITANS HELP PULL AN INJURED TRUCK DRIVER TO SAFETY, AFTER A FIERY CRASH ON WESTBOUND INTERSTATE 80, EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING, NEAR THE UTAH-WYOMING BORDER.

OFFICIALS SAY, A SEMITRAILER -- CARRYING CLEANING CHEMICALS AND CAR BATTERIES -- HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT... AND WAS REAR-ENDED, BY A SECOND SEMI.

UTAH HIGHWAY PATROL SARGEANT TODD ROYCE SAYS, THE CRASH SPARKED A LARGE FIRE... AND CLOSED THE FREEWAY COMPLETELY.

HOURS LATER, ONLY ONE, EASTBOUND LANE, WAS REOPENED.

POLICE SAY, OTHER MOTORISTS -- WHO WITNESSED THE CRASH -- PULLED THE DRIVER, OUT OF THE FRONT TRUCK.

HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

THE SECOND DRIVER WAS NOT SERIOUSLY INJURED.

THE REMAINING CLOSED TRAVEL LANES WERE NOT EXPECTED TO REOPEN, UNTIL AT LEAST LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
