Santa Clara River Flash Floods in Southern Utah

SOUTHERN UTAH RESIDENTS ARE KEEPING A CAREFUL EYE ON THE RISING SANTA CLARA RIVER, AFTER FLASH FLOODING CAUSED WEEKEND PROBLEMS.

A GROUP OF 13 CAMPERS -- AGES 9 TO 57, OUTSIDE ST. GEORGE -- WAS LEFT STRANDED, WHEN THE RIVER ROSE... FROM LESS THAN A FOOT, TO MORE THAN EIGHT FEET... WASHING AWAY THEIR CAMPSITE AND VEHICLE. NO ONE WAS HURT.

THEN -- IN THE TINY VACATION TOWN OF BROOKSIDE -- DAVID GARSIDE HAD TO RUSH TO HIS HOME, AS IT WAS ONE OF SEVERAL THAT SUFFERED WATER DAMAGE... PARTICULARLY IN GARAGES.

NEIGHBORS AND FIRE VOLUNTEERS SCRAMBLED -- THROUGH MUCH OF THE WEEKEND -- LAYING IN SANDBAGS OUTSIDE SEVERAL HOMES.

THE RIVERWATER HAD RECEDED BY MONDAY MORNING.  BUT SOUTHERN UTAH OFFIICIALS ARE ASKING PEOPLE TO KEEP THE SANDBAGS IN PLACE... BECAUSE MORE FLOODING MAY BE ON THE WAY.
