Partial Federal Government Shutdown Impacting Utahns

As the partial federal government shutdown strikes, Utah officials say as many as 40,000 people in our state could be furloughed from their jobs.

But most government services — from Medicare to unemployment benefits — should continue with reserve funding, provided the shutdown does not linger for long.

One of the first programs expected to be impacted, if the shutdown lingers, is the Womens, Infants and Children (WIC) program.  It provides food and nutrition assistance to more than 65,000 Utah moms and children.

State leaders say the Utah economy also shouldn’t be critically impacted, again, as long as the shutdown doesn't linger several weeks.
