Utah Landslide Lowers Copper Production

A massive landslide at Bingham Canyon Mine is expected to lower copper production by 50 cent this year.

A slice of the mountain gave way a week ago involving an estimated 165 million tons of debris and rock.

The area had already been evacuated and no one was injured. At least 27 hauling machines and trucks have been damaged in the slide. Engineering experts at Kennecott Utah Copper have not been granted access yet to the mine by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The mine is the largest operating open pit in the world.
