Accused Ogden Cop Killer Hangs Himself in Jail

The Ogden man -- accused of killing a narcotics police officer, and wounding five others -- was found dead, hanging from a bedsheet, early Friday morning.

The body of Matthew David Stewart was discovered -- in his Weber County Jail cell -- just an hour after jail personnel had observed him, alive and well, during their routine bed check.

Stewart had faced the possibility of a death sentence, for the January 2012 shooting death of Jared Francom.  He was killed -- and the other officers wounded -- as the served a narcotics search warrant at Stewart's Ogden home.

The State Department of Public Safety will now investigate the suicide.
